This unusual plant has a somewhat intricate taxonomy. First described as Apicra, it has then been placed in a genus of its own, Poellnitzia, then successively transfered from Haworthia, to Aloe, Astroloba and lately placed in the genus Tulista by the late Gordon D. Rowley.
Whatever the name, it is a beautiful little plant, with bluish green triangular leaves spirally arranged in a columnar growth, slowly clumping.
Its flowers are what make it so remarkable, beared by a simple inflorescence bending horizontally at tip, these are tubular, red, and upright to attract birds.
