Living fossile as it is often presented, Welwitschia mirabilis is an oddity on its own, consisting in a main stump from which arises a pair of leathery flat, ribbon like leaves growing during whole its lifespan. It is thriving along a 1000 X 100 km coastal strip straddling between Angola and Namibia.
Dioecious species, the male are producing pale orange coloured elongated cones, from which emerge stamens, the female cones being broader and blueish green.
