Michael Neumann from Bonn Botanic Garden, bulb specialist, first collected this species in south-western Kenya in 1991. Lawrie Springate, researcher on the Flora of the Arabian Peninsula from RBGE, particularly interested in succulent plants, made a second collection in the same area in 1999 and persuaded Len Newton, professor at Kenyatta University and co-author of Aloe The Definitive Guide, that it was a new species. Unfortunately Lawrie passed away before the publication of this species with its unusual epithet celebrating the two collectors.
